Universities are replacing projectors in their largest teaching spaces — and the reason is simple: a projector cannot be read from row 20. In a lecture hall or auditorium, the back row is 15–25 metres from the screen, the lights are often partly on for note-taking, and every seat must be able to see the same detail. That is exactly the problem a COB Smart LED display solves.
This guide covers the Riotouch COB all-in-one Smart LED range — 108″, 136″ and 163″ — and how to choose the right size for lecture theatres, auditoriums and large teaching spaces.
| Requirement in a large teaching space | Projector | COB Smart LED |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility from the back row | Fades with distance and ambient light | 600+ nits self-emissive — readable from the last row with lights on |
| Lamp / filter maintenance | Regular replacement, brightness decay | No lamp, no filter — sealed COB panel |
| Image uniformity | Hot-spotting, shadows from presenters | Uniform brightness across the whole surface |
| Damage in a busy hall | Fragile lens and lamp | Flip-Chip COB — impact and moisture resistant surface |
| Touch / interactivity | Not applicable | Optional 10-point touch |
For a university planning cycle of 7–10 years, the LED decision is usually made on total cost of ownership plus the fact that LED keeps working after hundreds of graduation ceremonies, conferences and open days.
All three sizes share the same platform — a flip-chip COB panel at P1.25 pixel pitch, 16:9 aspect ratio, and an all-in-one design that integrates the display, the computing, the audio and the camera.
| Model | 108″ | 136″ | 163″ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panel size (approx.) | 2400 × 1350 mm | 3000 × 1688 mm | 3600 × 2025 mm |
| Pixel pitch | P1.25 | P1.25 | P1.25 |
| Technology | Flip-Chip COB | Flip-Chip COB | Flip-Chip COB |
| Resolution | 1920 × 1080 (Full HD) | 2400 × 1350 | 2880 × 1620 (up to 4K source) |
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 | 16:9 | 16:9 |
| Brightness | 600+ nits | 600+ nits | 600+ nits |
| Typical room | Medium teaching rooms, seminar halls | Large classrooms, training centres | Auditoriums, lecture halls, command centres |
P1.25 means the distance between pixel centres is 1.25 mm. At the viewing distances typical of a lecture hall (8 m and beyond), P1.25 is effectively seamless — no visible pixel structure, and readable text even for fine detail like formulas, code or spreadsheets.
As a starting point, the diagonal should be roughly 1/6 of the distance from the screen to the furthest seat — the classic 4/6/8 rule. In practice for university spaces:
| Space | Seats | Furthest viewing distance | Recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seminar room / small teaching room | 30–60 | 6–10 m | 108″ |
| Large classroom / training centre | 60–120 | 10–15 m | 136″ |
| Tiered lecture hall / auditorium | 150–500+ | 15–30 m | 163″ (or multi-screen) |
Riotouch sales engineers will confirm the size against your floor plan, ceiling height and install method before quotation — because in an auditorium the mounting solution matters as much as the panel.
The integrated AI camera switches automatically between a wide gallery view and speaker tracking — useful for hybrid lectures, recorded classes and remote guest speakers, without an AV technician in the room.
Real-time multilingual subtitles and AI-generated lecture minutes make the same room usable for international programmes, visiting faculty and students studying in a second language.
Students and lecturers can cast from laptops, tablets and phones simultaneously — useful for group presentations, lab results and student project defence.
Where a lecture space also serves as an interactive teaching room, the display can be specified with optional touch, turning the LED wall into a large-format writing and annotation surface — while the venue is used for conferences and events.
A single cable carries 4K@60 video plus 100 W reverse charging — lecturers plug in one cable and present.
Universities rarely buy one screen. Campus deployments need central content, scheduled switching (term timetable, events, emergency notices) and device monitoring. The all-in-one Smart LED supports cloud content management, so a central AV or IT team can manage signage and teaching content across faculties from one place.
Public universities and government-funded projects normally require documented compliance. Riotouch LED displays carry CE, FCC, RoHS, CCC and ISO 9001, with Google EDLA certification on supported models — and we prepare datasheets, declarations and compliance documents for tender submissions on request.
Riotouch manufactures in its own factory, which means projects can be adapted rather than simply relabelled — see our LED OEM / ODM programme:
For large rooms, yes on the points that matter most: brightness independent of ambient light, no lamp or filter maintenance, a sealed impact-resistant surface, and a uniform image without hotspotting or presenter shadows.
Start with the 4/6/8 rule — screen diagonal ≈ 1/6 of the distance to the furthest seat. In practice: 108″ for seminar rooms (6–10 m), 136″ for large classrooms (10–15 m), 163″ for tiered halls and auditoriums (15–30 m, or multi-screen).
P1.25 means pixel centres are 1.25 mm apart. From 8 metres and beyond the pixel structure is effectively invisible, so text, formulas and spreadsheets stay readable to the last row.
Yes — specify optional 10-point touch and the LED wall becomes a large-format writing and annotation surface, while still working for conferences and events.
Yes. We supply CE, FCC, RoHS, CCC and ISO 9001 documentation, plus datasheets and declarations for public tenders — and detailed interface and signal specifications are published in our product specifications.
For universities, a lecture hall display is judged by one thing: can every student see it, for the next ten years. A projector answers that question with maintenance schedules and dimming lamps; a COB Smart LED at P1.25 answers it with a sealed, impact-resistant, 600+ nit surface that reads clearly from the back row.
Tell us the room — seats, viewing distance, ceiling height and install method — and we will recommend the right size between 108″, 136″ and 163″, with optional touch if the space doubles as a teaching room.
