When planning an LED display for outdoor or semi-outdoor use, you'll encounter a technical choice that's easy to confuse: COB or GOB? The names sound similar, and both involve "protecting the LED beads" — but they solve different problems and suit different scenarios. Choose wrong, and you'll either pay for performance you don't need or face premature failure in harsh environments.
This article clarifies the essential difference between the two, and where each fits within Riotouch's product line.
COB (Chip-on-Board) is a packaging process: LED chips are die-bonded directly onto the PCB, then covered with a layer of epoxy resin as a whole. Protection happens at the chip level — the LEDs no longer exist as individual exposed components.
GOB (Glue-On-Board) is a surface treatment process: a transparent glue layer is potted over the surface of a board that has already been SMD-mounted. Protection is added at the module surface level — the LEDs themselves remain individual SMD components.
In one sentence: COB means "no exposed LEDs"; GOB means "exposed LEDs covered by a glue layer."
| Comparison | COB | GOB |
|---|---|---|
| Protection level | Chip-level packaging | Module surface potting |
| Impact resistance | Extremely strong — no exposed LEDs | Strong, but LEDs sit beneath the glue |
| Protection capability | Waterproof, moisture-proof, oxidation-resistant | Waterproof, moisture-proof, impact-resistant |
| Contrast ratio | Up to 12,000:1–30,000:1 | Typically 3,000:1–6,000:1 |
| Viewing angle | Up to 170° | Typically 160° |
| Pixel pitch floor | Can go below P1.25 | P1.5+ more common |
| Cost | Higher | More economical |
| Maintenance | Often magnetic front maintenance | Front or rear maintenance |
The core challenge outdoors is unpredictability: rain, dust, temperature swings, UV, physical impact, and frequent contact during cleaning and maintenance.
COB's advantage is that it eliminates the failure mode of "LEDs being knocked off" at the root. With no exposed individual components, there's nothing to be dislodged. Riotouch's outdoor LED posters use IP65 protection and GOB coating, explicitly rated for "impact resistance — withstands handling and transport," targeting scenarios like retail windows and restaurant entrances where the display is frequently moved and cleaned.
GOB's advantage is that it delivers sufficient protection at lower cost. For fixed installations in outdoor advertising positions with no human contact, the GOB potting layer already handles rain and dust. Riotouch's indoor LED display stands also use GOB coating, providing "waterproof, impact-resistant, anti-oxidation" protection — showing that GOB isn't exclusive to outdoor use; it's a balanced solution between cost and protection.
The key judgment: If the screen will be touched, moved, or cleaned by people, COB's extra cost is justified. If it's fixed, viewed from a distance, and untouched, GOB controls the budget.
Protection technology determines how long a screen "survives"; brightness determines whether it "can be seen at all."
Standard indoor displays offer only 250–600 cd/m² — nearly unreadable in sunlight. Riotouch outdoor LED posters deliver 4000–5500 cd/m², five to ten times that of indoor products. This number matters more to outdoor success than COB versus GOB — a screen with excellent protection but unreadable content in sunlight serves no purpose.
When procuring, evaluate brightness and protection separately: insufficient brightness wastes even the best protection; insufficient protection won't survive a single rainy season regardless of brightness.
Riotouch doesn't treat COB and GOB as "new replacing old." They're allocated by viewing distance, contact frequency, and budget: COB for close-range, high-contact, high-image-quality requirements; GOB for long-distance, low-contact, cost-sensitive deployments.
| Product | Technology | Positioning |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor LED Poster (A-Frame series) | GOB + IP65 | Retail windows, restaurant entrances, transportable scenarios |
| Indoor LED Poster (70"/83") | COB | Flagship stores, showrooms — close-range, high image quality |
| Smart LED (108"/136"/163") | COB, P1.25 | University lecture halls, auditoriums, meeting rooms |
| Indoor LED Display Stand | GOB | Exhibitions, booths, curved designs |
Our team can recommend the right match between COB and GOB based on your installation environment, viewing distance, and budget — and provide sample evaluation or factory-direct pricing.
