Smart Board Asks for a Password: What the Lock Is and How to Remove It
Short answer: a password prompt on a Riotouch panel is a lock, not a fault. It is either a usage lock that was enabled in the Android settings, or a leftover from a unit that came out of a demo, rental or end-of-contract batch. If you know the PIN, remove it in Settings. If you do not, the supported routes are a factory reset through the recovery menu (clears user data) or a support-assisted unlock — we need the serial number and a photo of the lock screen.
We do not publish unlock codes, master passwords or bypass methods. That would defeat the purpose of the lock and would put the wrong instructions in the hands of anyone reading the page. What we do instead is described below.
What kind of lock is it?
- Android screen lock — a PIN, pattern or password set in the panel's Settings. The panel boots normally and asks for it on start-up or when you open certain apps.
- Usage lock / kiosk lock — an app or profile that restricts the panel to a single purpose (digital signage, a specific whiteboard app, a shop display). Often set by the integrator who installed it.
- Ex-demo or rental unit lock — set by the previous owner before the unit was returned. Common on refurbished boards.
- A prompt that is not a lock — some panels show a password field when they try to update firmware and the package cannot be verified. That is covered in the software download guide, not here.
Route 1 — You know the PIN: remove the lock properly
- Open Settings → Security & location → Screen lock and choose None or Swipe. You will be asked for the current PIN first.
- If a kiosk or device-management app set the lock, open Settings → Apps, find that app, and use Clear data or uninstall it. Some managed profiles require the app's administrator to release the device.
- Restart the panel and confirm it boots to the home screen.
Route 2 — You do not know the PIN: recovery factory reset
This clears apps, accounts and locally stored files on the panel. Note the current settings before you start.
- With the panel on, hold the power button and choose Restart; when the panel restarts, hold the Volume + (or the reset pinhole, depending on the model) to enter the recovery menu.
- In recovery, use the volume keys to move and the power button to select Wipe data / factory reset.
- Select Reboot system now. First boot takes several minutes.
- Reinstall the software you need from our Firmware Center and re-run touch calibration afterwards, because the reset clears the calibration map.
If your model does not expose a recovery menu, skip to route 3 — do not experiment with key combinations you found on unrelated models; the recovery layout differs between boards.
Route 3 — Ask support to unlock it (recommended for business units)
For panels bought from us, support can confirm the correct way to remove the lock for your board build and, where the unit is covered, walk you through it on a call. Have these ready:
- Model code and serial number from the label on the back of the panel.
- A clear photo of the lock screen (showing the prompt, not your PIN).
- The build number if the panel reaches Settings → About device, or how far the boot gets if it does not.
- Proof of purchase or the original order number for units bought from a reseller.
Contact our support team with those four items and we will reply with the procedure for your model.
What not to do
- Do not flash a firmware package you found online to bypass the lock — a package built for another board can block the panel permanently. Use only the package matching your model code.
- Do not run "unlock tools" from third-party sites; they often install unwanted software, and on an Android panel they can break the system partition.
- Do not factory reset a panel that is under a service contract before telling us — if the fault is hardware, the log we would have asked for is gone after a reset.
FAQ
Why does my panel ask for a password?
Either a usage lock was enabled in the Android settings, or
the unit came from a demo, rental or end-of-contract batch where the previous owner set a lock. It is not a hardware
fault.
Can I unlock it without losing my data?
If you know the PIN, yes — remove it in Settings. If you
do not, the supported route is a factory reset through the recovery menu, which clears user data, or a support-assisted
unlock using the serial number.
Should I flash firmware from the internet to bypass the lock?
No. A package built for a different
board can permanently block the panel. Only use the package for your model code from the Firmware Center.
